Which  Chainmail Glove Size should I Choose?

When deciding on sizing for the Honeywell Chainextra Butchers Glove With Cuff you will need to decide the length of glove that will best fit with your hand size. If you measure the length of your tallest finger to the point at which your hand meets your arm (as seen below) it should help you decide which size you fall into although please bear in mind the cuff length which does not cover your hand. If you are unsure please contact us.

Who Can Use THis Chainmail Glove?

The Honeywell Chainextra Butchers Glove With Cuff is suitable for use within the food processing industry, and is of particular benefit when dealing with knives, cutting or punching tools. The glove is also suitable for a wider range of activities which involves the use of cutting tools, although please check with us before proceeding with any activity outside of food processing. The glove can be used in the following areas:

  • Food Industries.
  • Meat & Poultry Processing.
  • Butchery.
  • Oyster Shucking.

Unlike the standard Chainmail Glove, this glove arrives with a short cuff offering the user increased protection for the wrist area. With an emphasis on protection and durability the chainmesh of this glove significantly reduces the number of repairs compared with what is generally recorded on the market.

Butchery

When working within the field of butchery it is essential that you maintain good levels of hand & arm protection. Unlike the poultry industry which often gets overlapped with butchery you will most likely require protection which is greater than just the hand area. We always stress that you should offer your employees and yourself the highest level of protection and that is why we have offered the longest chainmail glove with cuff protection for this industry, the other alternative would be a sleeve although this may limit arm movement when cutting.

The knife yielding hand should be covered by a glove offering cut protection to a high standard, the non-yielding hand should then be covered with the Butchers Glove in order to protect yourself when slashing and cutting. Knives within the butchery industry tend to be larger than your standard poultry knife and as a result the protection of arteries within the arm is key as an accident to this part of the arm can be fatal. We would therefore suggest the Honeywell Chainextra Butchers Glove With Cuff as a good solution to those working within meat processing as the length of glove is a crucial factor here.

As with all gloves it is suggested you opt for the highest level of protection, whilst Safety Gloves has offered this glove specific to the Butchery industry it is down to your HSE officer to establish which piece of PPE best suits your needs.

Testing to European Standards

EN 1082-1 (Protective Chainmail Clothing)

These chainmail gloves meet European Standards for protection against cuts and stabs by hand knives.

STORAGE INFORMATION

To ensure optimum protection, ChainExpert glove should be kept in perfect condition for use. At least once a day, it should be scrubbed vigourosly with hot soapy water (50 degrees) or in a mixture of hot water and detergent.

Rinsing at 82 degrees minimum. Disinfection with an approved product.

The ChainExpert Glove can also be cleaned in a washing machine. Do not clean chainmail protective gloves by knocking them against a hard surface.

Any glove showing signs of normal wear or missing chainmail must be replaced immediately by a glove in good condition. Only the manufacturer is authorised to repair defective gloves or to declare a glove beyond repair.

Key Features

This glove will offer cut and stab resistance to the hand of a user and the glove is specifically designed for the food industry. Arriving with a self-adjusting spring, the Honeywell Chainextra Butchers Glove will provide exceptional comfort to the user due to the natural elasticity of the strap. The glove will mould itself to the hand without the need for clip-on or any other type of closure.

Each Chainextra glove is identified by a unique number (1 number = 1 glove) followed by the attribution of the glove, lifetime and repairs. This make the management of your inventory easier and allows you ensure that your glove is up to standard.

What is EN 388?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 388. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 388. EN 388 stands for Mechanical Resistance, and informs you of your gloves' resistance to abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures.

How Do I Read the EN 388 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score that this product achieves, the better the product will be at resisting that hazard. Products will score between Level 0 and Level 4 for abrasion, tears and punctures, and if they weren’t tested for that hazard you will see N/A written instead of a number.

Cuts are a little different and, with the EN 388 standard rewritten in 2016, it means that gloves will either be tested to cut resistance or ISO cut resistance (sometimes called TDM cut resistance). Gloves tested to cut resistance will score between Level 0 and Level 5, and gloves tested to ISO cut resistance will achieve a score between Level A and Level F with the higher letter offering better cut protection.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 388 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 388 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.
