How to Stay Cool on the Construction Site

Friday, 11 May 2018

Construction work can be tough at the best of times, but under the searing summer sun, time on-site can feel like torture. Heavy work boots, thick safety gloves and a stuffy hard hat can all contribute to a miserable work day in the heat, making you especially prone to hazards like heat exhaustion and heat-stroke that can be recipes for disaster on a fast-paced site. Luckily, it doesn't have to be this way, as there are plenty of ways to beat the heat while staying productive in the sun.

While most heat-beating tips are well-known to the majority of workers, there are some helpful tools out there that you may not be aware of.  Here, we'll tell you about a new and innovative solution to keeping you cool all day long, and then we'll go over the basics of staying cool.

Cool Tech: The Techniche HyperKewl Evaporative COoling Crown Cooler

While home remedies for staying cool are ten a penny, what you may not know is that companies like Techniche have been working for years on innovative solutions to keep you cool on-site. There's no better example than the Techniche HyperKewl Evaporative Cooling Crown Cooler: a simple and affordable way to keep your hard hat cool for 5 - 10 hours at a time.

Using breathable polyester mesh and HyperKewl cooling fabric, this little invention can keep you 10 - 15°F cooler than your surroundings, allowing you to beat the heat like never before. To get your Crown Cooler working at maximum capacity, just follow these simple steps:

1) Soak Your Crown Cooler

Soaking your crown cooler for 1-2 minutes

To get the cooling process started, simply submerge your Crown Cooler in water, and leave it for 1 - 2 minutes.

2) Squeeze it Out

Squeeze out the excess water

To stop the cooler from dripping all over your clothes, give it a gentle squeeze. Do this lightly without twisting, as you only want to remove the small amount of water that would otherwise drip out.

3) Put it in Your Hat

Put your crown cooler in your hat

After wetting the Crown Cooler, simply place it in the top of your hat. Secure the Velcro straps to your helmet's suspension straps so that it's secure and won't fall out or slip around.

4) Cooler Hats Prevail

Four Golden Rules of Cooling

Now that you've learned about our favourite way to keep cool on-site, it's worth going over the basics so you're fully prepared. While these tips aren't anything new, they can be a lifesaver when it comes to staying cool during this year's inevitable heatwave.

1) Stay Hydrated
We know, this is an obvious one, but you'd be surprised how often this little tip is forgotten. A simple gulp of water every 20 minutes can be the difference between a pleasant work day and heat-stroke, so a water bottle is a must. Avoid drinks like coffee, sugary soda and alcohol, as these can contain diuretics that will actually dehydrate you and do more harm than good.

2) Start Early
Most construction work starts early in the morning, and for good reason. Summer days are usually hottest around 4pm, so it's best to make sure all the heavy lifting is done long before the end of the day.

3) Dress for the Weather
While you may be attached to your favourite pair of work pants, what works in December may not be the right choice in July. Choose clothes that are loose-fitting, thin and light in colour, and you'll be much happier come midday.

4) Take Breaks
While not every boss will be thrilled by the idea, a short break out of the sun once in a while can really boost performance and stave off heat exhaustion. Just 5 minutes in the shade can be a real saviour.
