Best Gloves for Liquid Nitrogen 2024

18 October 2023  |  Sharman

From laboratory work, to cold storage and even making ice cream, liquid nitrogen is a versatile tool that's popular in wide variety of industries. But, with a boiling point of -195°C, it's also incredibly dangerous, so protecting your hands is essential.

Depending on factors like environment or the volume of liquid nitrogen you're working with, the length and durability of the gloves you need will vary. So to help you find the pair for you, we've put together this Best Gloves for Liquid Nitrogen 2024 guide.

What Does This Guide Cover?

What Type of Liquid Nitrogen Gloves Do I Need?

The gloves in this guide are split into flexible and waterproof sections, to make it easier for you to find the gloves for you. Both the flexible and waterproof gloves offer robust protection from liquid nitrogen, but have some key differences:

  • Flexible Cryogenic Gloves: The polyamide coating is tough and can withstand handling materials that have been submerged in liquid nitrogen. They're also lighter and more dextrous than the completely waterproof gloves
  • Waterproof Cryogenic Gloves: With a thicker, synthetic fibre outer layer, the waterproof gloves offer more complete protection from liquid nitrogen, withstanding splashes and submersion depending on the length

What Length of Gloves Do I Need?

Once you've decided on whether you need lighter or completely waterproof cryogenic gloves, you can decide what length of gloves you need. This will depend on a variety of factors, including your own risk assessment. The cryo gloves are available in the following lengths:

  • Short: Just covering your hands, they're the length of a standard pair of work gloves, but with an elastic cuff for a more secure and comfortable fit. If you're working with liquid nitrogen without much of a splash risk and you need to prioritise dexterity, short gloves could be for you
  • Mid-Length: These feature more extended protection for your wrists and part of the forearm. This provides light splash coverage, but won't restrict your flexibility and range of movement much more than short gloves
  • Gauntlet: As the name suggests, gauntlet gloves offer serious protection, with even greater coverage that extends cold resistance all the way to the elbows. At this length, the chances of liquid nitrogen splashing inside your gloves is greatly lowered as well.
  • Shoulder-Length: Covering nearly your whole arm, these gloves offer maximum safety and peace of mind, perfect for the highest risk jobs with the greatest risk of spills and splashes

How Do These Gloves Protect My Hands?

The gloves on this list are Scilabub Frosters gloves, which are high-quality and trusted by the scientific community. Their outer layer is woven polyamide which is extremely water- and cold-resistant. In fact, they're graded highly against European safety standards for contact and convective cold contact.

How Do These Gloves Keep My Hands Warm?

The insides of the gloves are insulated with a polyolefin and polyester micro fibre layer, which offers much more effective heat retention than standard thermal fibre. Also, as it's so effective, excess padding isn't needed, so your hands can stay dextrous.

What Is Liquid Nitrogen Used For?

Liquid nitrogen has a temperature of around -220°C and has a wide list of uses because of its extremely low boiling point. Suitable tasks include:

  • Wart removal
  • Cancerous cell removal
  • Cryotherapy (using liquid nitrogen for skin therapy)
  • Cryogenics (the study of extremely low temperatures)
  • Laboratory work
  • Scientific work
  • Storage (including cryopreservation)
  • Ice cream making
  • Cooking
  • Computer cooling
  • Dermatology

How Dangerous is Liquid Nitrogen?

The extremely low temperature and low boiling point of liquid nitrogen that makes it so useful, also makes it really dangerous. Side effects of liquid nitrogen accidents include but aren't limited to:

  • Frostbite
  • Ice burn
  • Frozen solid fingers
  • Skin lesions
  • Headaches
  • Asphyxiation
  • Blindness

So, as you can imagine, wearing adequate protection like the gloves in this list, is hugely important for safely working with liquid nitrogen.
