Scilabub Frosters Cryogenic Gauntlet Gloves

Featuring a gauntlet length arm, the Frosters Cryogenic Gauntlet Gloves feature a triple thermal layer that can protect the hands when handling materials as low as -190°C. This extra long style ensures exceptional cold resistance, proving suitable for applications such as cryogenics, dry ice handling, scientific and sub zero work.

What's Included?

With your purchase you will receive:

  • 1 x Pair of Scilabub Cryogenic Gloves

What Are the Cryogenic Gloves For?

The Frosters Cryogenic Gloves offer protection against the extreme cold, including when handling materials that have a temperatures that typically range from -120°C to -190°C. As their polyolefin and polyester micro fibre middle liner works with a polyamide coating, the gloves offer effective thermal insulation that doesn't become stiff even when temperatures are extremely low. Some tasks where we would recommend these gloves include:

  • Bottle handling
  • Cryogenics
  • Dry ice handling
  • Freezer work
  • Laboratory
  • Scientists
  • Sub zero work

Please note that this gloves are designed for handling extremely cold materials. We wouldn't recommend them for simple, cold outdoor work, however if your work means that you have to handle items that are far below freezing, then these gloves are ideal.

What Temperatures Can They Protect Against?

These gloves are designed for people who work with materials that are far below freezing. This can include cryogenics, dry ice handling, bottle handling and scientific work where you can expect to experiment with freezing materials. These gloves are proven to prove suitable when handling solid materials that are between -120°C and -190°C without them becoming stiff.

What are the Main Uses of the Frosters Range?

One of the main uses of the Frosters range is to protect against spills and splashes of cryogenic materials, including liquid nitrogen. This can occur when pouring, or just generally working with, ultra-cold cryogenic materials. Please note that these gloves are not suitable for immersion in liquid nitrogen.

See Scilabub in Action

Scilabub Gloves are designed for handling items that have been submerged in liquid nitrogen. This includes in vaccine research, where Boris Johnson was seen visiting a vaccine research facility in September 2020. You can see scientists use Scilabub to protect their hands towards the end of the below video.

Why Should I Trust These Gloves?

Working with temperatures this low can cause serious damage to your hands and arms, so you'll want to know that you can trust what these gloves say. In order to do that, these gloves have been tested to EN standards EN 388 and EN 511, measuring their resistance to mechanical threats and the cold. They achieved the following scores:

EN 388

Hazard Level of Resistance
Abrasion Resistance Level 2
Cut Resistance N/A
Tear Resistance Level 2
Puncture Resistance N/A

EN 511

Hazard Level of Resistance
Contact Cold Level 2
Convective Cold Level 2
Water Permeability N/A

How Waterproof Are These Gloves?

The Frosters Cryogenic Gloves feature a polyamide waterproof coating that can resist condensed water on cold surfaces. Please note that this is not completely waterproof, and will only protect your hands when handling damp materials or in a place with cold water vapour.

For greater protection, we would recommend the following waterproof gloves:

How Do The Frosters Cryogenic Gloves Work?

The Scilabub Gloves feature an outer layer of woven polyamide, which has a waterproof coating that can resist water vapour and water on damp materials. However, the middle layer features a special polyolefin and polyester micro fibre that has twice the effectiveness of a normal thermal fibre. This then helps to minimise heat transfer without the material being too thick to handle materials.

What Does the Frosters Gloves Fit Feel Like?

The interior of the Frosters Gloves is filled with cotton, meaning that they are incredibly comfortable to wear. This cotton stretches up the elbow, offering exceptional protection when working in dangerous environments. This level of comfort for high risk work, when working with things such as liquid nitrogen.

Are They Available in Longer Sizes?

The Frosters Gloves are available in a range of different lengths. They are available by clicking on the links below:

Will I Retain Dexterity in Freezing Conditions?

When handling freezing cold materials, you can expect to want to retain dexterity, as this helps to retain grip for yourself while minimising any risk. These gloves are designed to stay flexible even when handling materials that are lower than -100°C, helping to ensure that you can do your job with more productivity and more impact.

Which Size Should I Choose?

The Frosters Gloves are available in four sizes that should be suitable for most users. To find your perfect pair, please measure the circumference and length of your palm and match the results to the table below.

Glove Size Palm Circumference Palm Length
Size 8 (Small) 203mm 182mm
Size 9 (Medium) 229mm 192mm
Size 10 (Large) 254mm 204mm
Size 11 (Extra Large) 279mm 215mm

What is EN 511?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 511. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 511. EN 511 stands for all things cold, and means that your gloves have been tested for their convective cold resistance, contact cold resistance and water permeability properties.

How Do I Read the EN 511 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score achieved the better the product will be at resisting the hazard tested. For the first two tests (convective cold resistance and contact cold resistance), the product will achieve between a Level 0 and a Level 4. The higher the score the better the resistance, with a Level 0 score meaning that it failed and an N/A score meaning that the product wasn’t tested for this hazard.

For water permeability the product will achieve either a Level 0 or a Level 1. Level 1 means that the product is waterproof, and Level 0 means that it isn't.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 511 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 511 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.
