EN 388

  • EN 388: 4X41FP

EN 388 is a European regulation governing the sale of gloves used for safety and protection. It determines the gloves' performance when used for protection against mechanical machinery by measuring the fabric's abrasion, cut, tear and puncture resistance.

The EN 388 cut resistance test uses a single sharp implement to repeatedly pressure a glove in order to determine the amount of force required to cause visible and functional damage.

Standard Resistance Rating
Abrasion Resistance Level 4
Cut Resistance N/A
Tear Resistance Level 4
Puncture Resistance Level 1
ISO Cut Resistance Level F
ANSI Impact Resistance Level P

What Is Extrication?

Extrication is the often lengthy process involved in the removal of a vehicle from around a person trapped in place during a car crash. Unfortunately incredibly common, extrication is incredibly dangerous due to the nature of the material involved. Wearing the wrong pair of gloves during this process can result in serious injury.

Incredible Level F Cut Resistance

Extrication is a dangerous profession. Jagged and incredibly sharp sheet metal can slice straight through your hand upon contact. A Level F cut protection rating ensures your hands are protected from in excess of an incredible thirty newtons of downward force.

What Does This Actually Mean?

Plain and simple, if you're working with sharp stuff, a Level F cut resistance rating makes all the difference. Where a blade would effortlessly slash right through a pair of ordinary gloves, a Level F cut resistance ensures most blades and sharp edges get lodged between the tight fibres that make up a proper cut-resistant safety glove.

Cut protection areas

Impact Dissipation Unit

Though cutting is the threat that most people worry about damaging their hands, it is just as important to consider the effect that impact can have. Impact, both accumulative and single contact, can cause serious, long lasting damage. It is often overlooked, however in professions where dense, heavy and hazardous material is being handled, it shouldn't be.

Patented SuperFabric Protection

Serious about heavy-duty protection, SuperFabric was developed in 1996 as a solution for preventing needle and knife incisions. It is the layer that prevents a serrated edge, needle or blade end from breaking through your glove to cause serious injury to your hand.

High Visibility Design

One of these is the high-visibility elastic cuff that has a Velcro closure — making the glove both more comfortable and more secure. HexArmor EXT 4013 Extrication Gloves also have an all-round high-visibility design that is great for emergency workers who may be working in the dark near dangerous areas (e.g. roads) where visibility is a constant issue.

Washing Instructions for HexArmor EXT 4013 Extrication Gloves

HexArmor EXT 4013 Extrication Safety Gloves are suitable for machine washing. We recommend you check the washing instructions on the product carefully before washing.

What is EN 388?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 388. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 388. EN 388 stands for Mechanical Resistance, and informs you of your gloves' resistance to abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures.

How Do I Read the EN 388 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score that this product achieves, the better the product will be at resisting that hazard. Products will score between Level 0 and Level 4 for abrasion, tears and punctures, and if they weren’t tested for that hazard you will see N/A written instead of a number.

Cuts are a little different and, with the EN 388 standard rewritten in 2016, it means that gloves will either be tested to cut resistance or ISO cut resistance (sometimes called TDM cut resistance). Gloves tested to cut resistance will score between Level 0 and Level 5, and gloves tested to ISO cut resistance will achieve a score between Level A and Level F with the higher letter offering better cut protection.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 388 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 388 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.
