What Chemicals Do the MaxiChem Gloves 56-633 Protect Against?

The MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves have been tested under the EN 475 standard, and have confirmed resistance against 6 different chemicals. They achieve an EN 475 chemical resistance of JKLMNO, the details of which are outlined in the table below. The EN 475 standard that these gloves meet also shows that they are capable of protecting against microorganism penetration.

EN 374

Chemical Level of Resistance
n-Heptane Level 6 (480 mins)
Sodium Hydroxide (40%) Level 6 (480 mins)
Sulphuric Acid (96%) Level 4 (120 mins)
Nitric Acid (65%) Level 4 (120 mins)
Acetic Acid (99%) Level 3 (60 mins)
Ammonia (25%) Level 5 (240 mins)

What Does this Mean?

A level 6 means the gloves can protect against a chemical for about eight hours, level 5 provides four hours of protection and the lower levels will provide between one and two hours of protection. For more information, a full guide to EN 475 standards can be found by clicking the "what is EN 374" tab at the top of the page.

What Else Will the MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves Protect Against?

In addition to chemical resistance, the MaxiChem 56-633 Gloves offer outstanding protection against certain physical risks. Their durability can be demonstrated by their EN 388 ratings, a standard which tests the abrasion, cut, tear and puncture resistance of a glove. The 56-633 gloves attained the following EN 388 scores:

EN 388

  • 4342B
Hazard Level of Resistance
Abrasion Resistance Level 4
Cut Resistance Level 3
Tear Resistance Level 4
Puncture Resistance Level 2
Blade Cut Level B

What Does this Mean?

These gloves offer top levels of abrasion and tear resistance for maximum protection against scratches and scrapes. This means they are suitable for handling rough materials and are likely to have a long lifespan due to their resistance to such damage. They also have a good level of cut resistance for low level protection against mild lacerations.

Which Size Should I Choose?

The MaxiChem 56-633 Gloves are supplied in four different sizes, meaning that you should be able to find the size that suits you. To find the correct size, please measure the circumference of your hand as shown in the diagram below.

How to Measure your Hand

Glove Size Palm Circumference Palm Length
Size 8 (Medium) 203mm 182mm
Size 9 (Large) 229mm 192mm
Size 10 (Extra Large) 254mm 204mm

How Long Are the MaxiChem Chemical Resistant Gloves 56-633?

The MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves are designed to be extra long, stretching from the fingertips to just below elbows. The approximate length (give or take 10mm), is 350mm, which should stretch to just before your elbow. This extra long design is ideal for submerging hands in oil, grease, liquids and chemicals.

How Much Grip Do the MaxiChem Gloves Provide?

The MaxiChem Gloves use something called GRIPtech technology to offer superb grip. In using a micro-cup, non-grip finish, these gloves can help to make gripping slippery items easy. This improves safety at work, while also increasing user productivity.

What MAterials Are the MaxiChem Gloves Made From?

The MaxiChem Gloves are designed to be durable but simple, comprising of just a few materials that aren't irritable on the skin, yet offer durability and protection. These materials are as follows:

  • Coating: NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber)
  • Coating Texture: Micro-Foam with Non-Slip Grip
  • Liner: Nylon

Can Liquid Penetrate the MaxiCHem Gauntlet Gloves?

Coated in liquid repelling nitrile, the MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves provide fantastic protection against penetration by water, oil and chemicals. Their extra-long design also covers the majority of the forearm making it more difficult for liquid to travel down the glove and enter through the cuff. However, as they don't fit snugly against the forearm, it is possible for liquid top enter the gloves if they travel its full length. For maximum protection against this risk, a tighter fitting design is recommended.

How Comfortable Are the MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves to Wear?

Despite their durability, the MaxiChem Gloves are impressively lightweight and comfortable to wear. They are made with a knitted, seamless liner that is gentle against the skin and that allows for good hand flexibility. Additionally, their tailored cuff helps keep the gloves securely in place so they don't slip off the hand as you work.

How Flexible Are the MaxiChem Chemical Resistant Gloves?

The MaxiChem liner is made from a combination of nylon, Spandex, polyester and glass for a high level of flexibility and mechanical resistance. It fits snugly against the hand and has an ultra-lightweight construction so as to avoid impeding movement.

How Lightweight Are the MaxiChem Gloves?

The liner as well as the synthetic coating on the MaxiChem Gloves are designed to be lightweight for better dexterity and tactile sensitivity. This can be demonstrated by their palm thickness, which is about 1.40mm.

Can I Buy These Gloves as a Single Pair?

Gloves from ATG can be washed safely in the following way:

1. Use commercial laundry soap or detergent (do NOT use dry cleaning solutions!)
2. Wash in warm to medium hot water, do not exceed 104°F (40°C)
3. Wash for 10 minutes
4. Rinse in cold water.
5. Repeat wash and rinse if soiling is especially heavy
6. Rinse in cold water
7. Tumble dry - maximum temperature 140°F (60°C)

When laundering gloves that have especially heavy dirt or grease, include several pieces of heavy canvas in the second wash cycle - friction from the canvas against the gloves helps loosen and remove deep dirt.

IMPORTANT NOTE

During the use of gloves and the laundering process glove performance can and will deteriorate. For critical areas requiring cut and heat resistance tests need to be conducted after use and laundering to ensure that the performance criteria still meet the needs of those using the glove. Safety Gloves can accept no liability once gloves have been washed.

What is EN 388?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 388. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 388. EN 388 stands for Mechanical Resistance, and informs you of your gloves' resistance to abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures.

How Do I Read the EN 388 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score that this product achieves, the better the product will be at resisting that hazard. Products will score between Level 0 and Level 4 for abrasion, tears and punctures, and if they weren’t tested for that hazard you will see N/A written instead of a number.

Cuts are a little different and, with the EN 388 standard rewritten in 2016, it means that gloves will either be tested to cut resistance or ISO cut resistance (sometimes called TDM cut resistance). Gloves tested to cut resistance will score between Level 0 and Level 5, and gloves tested to ISO cut resistance will achieve a score between Level A and Level F with the higher letter offering better cut protection.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 388 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 388 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.

Incredibly solid gloves
03 July 2022  |

I use these for preparing Chillies, they protect against capsaicin and protect against isopropyl which I use for sanitation. The cut resistance is brilliant for handling blades from the cutting machine while they are also extremely heat resistant and are capable of holding metal and glass at 150°C straight from an oven.
