What Chemicals Do the MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves Protect Against?

The MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves can protect your hands against a wide range of chemicals, however have been tested specifically under EN 374 to 6 chemicals. These chemicals are listed below, and the gloves achieve an EN 374 score of EN 374: JKLMNO. The gloves are also certified under EN 374-5, meaning that they will protect the hands against micro-organisms.

What Does this Mean?

Briefly, the level 6 achieved by n-Heptane, sodium hydroxide and ammonia, mean that the gloves will protect the hands for at least eight hours, while the chemicals with lesser levels will protect the hands for between one hour and two hours.

What Else Will the MaxiChem Gauntlet Gloves Protect Against?

The MaxiChem Gloves feature a tough nitrile rubber liner and a nylon inner liner, than work to provide comfort, protection and durability. This means that the gloves provide so much more than chemical resistance, including protection against oils, liquids and grease. Finally, the gloves are certified under EN 388, meaning that the gloves can protect the hands against mechanical risks and threats.

The approximate length (give or take 10mm), is 350mm, which should stretch to just before your elbow. This extra long design is ideal for submerging hands in oil, grease, liquids and chemicals.

What is EN 374?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 374. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we're concerned about here is EN 374. EN 374 stands for Protective Gloves Against Chemicals, and informs you of your gloves' resistance to chemicals and micro-organisms.

How Do I Read the EN 374 Score?

Understanding EN 374 takes a little but more effort than with other standards as it comes with different letters, numbers and symbols that represent different levels of protection against different types of chemicals. Some of the different things you may see include:

  • Symbol: Corresponds to the test that the products were subjected to
  • Type: Corresponds to how many chemicals the product was tested against
  • Letter: Corresponds to which chemicals the product was tested against
  • Number: Corresponds to how long the product can withstand the chemical

The product is good quality but unfortunately not for us this time. We are finding great difficulty in sourcing small hand size gloves for our female operatives - but these were particularly long, actually reaching up into their armpits - very safe as far as handling chemical products would be concerned - but they may be more suitable for veterinarian purposes. Far too long for our current requirement. Thank you for trying ! Our search continues!

Good gloves that last a while. I use a lot of solvent and water-based degreasers, almost every day, and these gloves do a good job at keeping my hands out of the nasty chemicals.
