Protection Ratings and Safety Standards

EN 388: Mechanical Resistance

  • EN 388: 4X43D

EN 388 is a European regulation governing the sale of gloves used for safety and protection. It determines the gloves' performance when used for protection against mechanical machinery by measuring the fabric's abrasion, cut, tear and puncture resistance.

The EN 388 cut resistance test uses a single sharp implement to repeatedly pressure a glove in order to determine the amount of force required to cause visible and functional damage.

Standard Resistance Rating
Abrasion Resistance Level 4
Cut Resistance N/A
Tear Resistance Level 4
Puncture Resistance Level 3
ISO Cut Resistance Level D

What Does a Level D Rating Actually Mean?

Cut Level D Gloves are great for use in areas where you'll likely come into contact with sharp metal, exposed glass and blades from time to time. Though they do not offer as much protection as our maximum rated gloves, they do offer a greater amount of protection, flexibility, and control for manual handling in building and construction settings.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Level D cut-resistance rating is great for building and construction
  • Polyurethane coating is lightweight and durable
  • Palm-only coating allows sweat and odour to exit naturally
  • Maximum tear and abrasion resistance ratings
  • Great dexterity for conducting intricate precision-based manual tasks
  • Flexible knit-wrist is soft and comfortable
  • Available in a range of different sizes

Incredibly Lightweight and Sensitive

MCR Safety CT1017PU Cut-Resistant Gloves are some of the lightest cut-resistant gloves available on the market today. Their skin-tight fit and use of featherweight polyurethane provides the wearer with an exceptional level of comfort and control over the material at hand, making it easier to carry out detailed tasks like fitting and certain maintenance tasks.

Maximum Abrasion Resistance

MCR Safety CT1017PU Cut Pro Gloves use a lightweight polyurethane coating to achieve the maximum abrasion resistance rating available under EN 388 2016. This means the fabric is bolstered and strengthened and that you don't have to worry about degradation and fraying if you work handling textured and abrasive material.

What's So Special About Polyurethane?

Polyurethane is an incredibly flexible and lightweight coating that preserves dexterity and accuracy in the fingers. A heavier glove does not allow a high degree of finger movement, thus reducing the users ability to perform precise and dexterous tasks when wearing it. Polyurethane has a lightweight feel to it that moulds the glove to the natural contour of your hand, providing what is routinely referred to as a "skin tight" fit.

Why Choose a Palm-Only Coating?

If you find you sweat a lot during the workday, or you get home and your hands are red and smelly, a palm-only coating is perfect for you. Palm-only simply refers to the fact that only the palm area is covered by polyurethane, allowing odour and sweat to exit the glove freely at the back of the hand.

Soft and Flexible Knitwrist Cuff

The inclusion of a flexible knit-wrist cuff helps prevent dirt, dust and debris entering the glove at the wrist. Soft and comfortable, it also allows the user to alter the position of their glove easily without causing irritation or discomfort.

What is EN 388?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 388. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 388. EN 388 stands for Mechanical Resistance, and informs you of your gloves' resistance to abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures.

How Do I Read the EN 388 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score that this product achieves, the better the product will be at resisting that hazard. Products will score between Level 0 and Level 4 for abrasion, tears and punctures, and if they weren’t tested for that hazard you will see N/A written instead of a number.

Cuts are a little different and, with the EN 388 standard rewritten in 2016, it means that gloves will either be tested to cut resistance or ISO cut resistance (sometimes called TDM cut resistance). Gloves tested to cut resistance will score between Level 0 and Level 5, and gloves tested to ISO cut resistance will achieve a score between Level A and Level F with the higher letter offering better cut protection.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 388 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 388 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.
