Scilabub Frosters Cryogenic Waterproof Gloves with Elasticated Wrist

Handling liquid nitrogen requires a waterproof coating, high dexterity and outstanding resistance to the cold, which is why the Frosters Cryogenic Waterproof Gloves with Elasticated Wrist use a double thermal layer to offer resistance to liquids, as well as temperatures between -120°C and -190°C. The elasticated wrist prevents any debris from entering the gloves, which helps to make the gloves perfect for bottle handling, cryogenics, dry ice handling, scientific and laboratory work and sub zero applications.

What's Included?

With your purchase you will receive:

  • 1 x Pair of Scilabub Cryogenic Gloves

What Are the Cryogenic Gloves For?

The Cryogenic Waterproof Gloves are designed for the extreme cold, specifically for tasks such as liquid nitrogen handling where you need resistance to water too. Tasks where these gloves are recommended include:

  • Bottle handling
  • Cryogenics
  • Dry ice handling
  • Liquid nitrogen handling
  • Freezer work
  • Scientists
  • Sub zero work

Please note that these gloves are designed for handling extremely cold materials. We wouldn't recommend them for simple, cold outdoor work, however if your work means that you have to handle items that are far below freezing, then these gloves are ideal.

What Temperatures Can They Protect Against?

These gloves are designed for people who work with materials that are far below freezing. This can include cryogenics, dry ice handling, bottle handling and scientific work where you can expect to experiment with freezing materials. Although there is no real answer, these gloves are proven to prove suitable when handling solid materials that are between -120°C and -190°C without them becoming stiff.

How Waterproof Are the Frosters Cryogenic Gloves?

The Cryogenic Gloves are designed to offer superb insulation, with their superb synthetic fibre outer layer offering total water resistance. This is particularly ideal for cryogenics and liquid nitrogen handling, as you will be expected to come into contact with extremely cold substances that may be in liquid form. If this is the case, then these gloves will completely protect your hands, wrists and fingers from injury.

See Scilabub in Action

Scilabub Gloves are designed for handling items that have been submerged in liquid nitrogen. This includes in vaccine research, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson was seen visiting a vaccine research facility in September 2020. You can see scientists use Scilabub to protect their hands towards the end of the below video.

Why Should I Trust These Gloves?

Working with temperatures this low can cause serious damage to your hands and arms, so you'll want to know that you can trust what these gloves say. In order to do that, these gloves have been tested to EN standards EN 388 and EN 511, measuring their resistance to mechanical threats and the cold. They achieved the following scores:

EN 388

Hazard Level of Resistance
Abrasion Resistance Level 2
Cut Resistance N/A
Tear Resistance Level 2
Puncture Resistance N/A

EN 511

Hazard Level of Resistance
Contact Cold Level 2
Convective Cold Level 2
Water Permeability Level 1

What If I Don't Need Waterproof Gloves?

Not all extreme cold tasks require waterproof gloves, and if this is the case with you then you can save money by purchasing Frosters Gloves without the waterproof membrane. Don't worry, they still come with the same outstanding mechanical and cold resistance, however they lack the ability to prevent water from penetrating the gloves. You can access these gloves by clicking on the links below:

How Do The Frosters Cryogenic Gloves Work?

The Scilabub Gloves feature a special outer layer that is designed to resist water, ideal for handling freezing items submerged in substances such as liquid nitrogen. However, the middle layer features a special polyolefin and polyester micro fibre that has twice the effectiveness of a normal thermal fibre. This then helps to minimise heat transfer without the material being too thick to handle materials.

What Does the Frosters Gloves Fit Feel Like?

The Frosters Gloves with Elasticated Wrist are designed to be comfortable, with a cotton interior coating that keeps the hands cosy and warm during use. The elasticated wrist can protect the hands from external risks too, preventing debris from entering the gloves. If you are concerned that the gloves aren't long enough, then you can always buy Frosters Gloves with longer arms.

Are They Available in Longer Sizes?

The Frosters Gloves are available in a range of different lengths. They are available by clicking on the links below:

Will I Retain Dexterity in Freezing Conditions?

When handling freezing cold materials you can expect to want to retain dexterity, as this helps to retain grip for yourself while minimising any risk. These gloves are designed to stay flexible even when handling materials that are lower than -100°C, helping to ensure that you can do your job with more productivity and more impact.

Which Size Should I Choose?

The Frosters Gloves are available in four sizes that should be suitable for most users. To find your perfect pair, please measure the circumference and length of your palm and match the results to the table below.

Glove Size Palm Circ.  Palm Length Min. Length of Glove
Size 8 (Small) 203mm 182mm 240mm
Size 9 (Medium) 229mm 192mm 250mm
Size 10 (Large) 254mm 204mm 260mm
Size 11 (Extra Large) 279mm 215mm 270mm

What is EN 511?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 511. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 511. EN 511 stands for all things cold, and means that your gloves have been tested for their convective cold resistance, contact cold resistance and water permeability properties.

How Do I Read the EN 511 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score achieved the better the product will be at resisting the hazard tested. For the first two tests (convective cold resistance and contact cold resistance), the product will achieve between a Level 0 and a Level 4. The higher the score the better the resistance, with a Level 0 score meaning that it failed and an N/A score meaning that the product wasn’t tested for this hazard.

For water permeability the product will achieve either a Level 0 or a Level 1. Level 1 means that the product is waterproof, and Level 0 means that it isn't.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 511 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 511 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.
