Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves SB02459A

Providing you with great quality at a competitive price, the Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves are ideal for fire-brigades and structural firefighting. Made from high quality materials such as Kevlar and Pyrohide leather and accredited by EN 659, EN 388 and EN 407 standards, you can trust these gloves to be effective.

Suitability

The Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves are suitable for use by firefighters for structural firefighting, having been certified to EN 659. The gloves may also be suitable for other people who need protection against fire and extreme heat, depending on the specifics of the situation.

Materials

Southcombe take fire protection very seriously and to ensure that your hands are protected, the Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves are manufactured from a number of materials that are known for their flame retardant qualities. The gloves include:

  • Outer: 100% Pyrohide leather
  • Interlining: Porelle membrane
  • Lining: 100% Kevlar with glass fibre
  • Knuckle: 100% FR coated Kevlar
  • Cuff: 95% Nomex, 5% Kevlar
  • Thread: Sewn throughout with Twaron and Technora thread

Pyrohide Outer

Pyrohide leather is exclusively manufactured in the UK by Southcombe and is ideal for resistance against heat, fire, water, salt-water, liquid chemicals (including sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, ethanol et cetera) and Man Made Mineral Fibres (MMMF). The Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves utilise pyrohide leather for greater general protection. Pyrohide is used by 51 out of the 61 fire brigades in the UK and retains tactile properties in dry or wet weather.

Kevlar Lining

Each Southcombe Firemaster Falcon has a Kevlar lining that provides high levels of resistance against cuts or slashes and also prevents abrasion from damaging the glove. The Kevlar lining has also been treated with Polygiene, stopping odor-causing bacteria, viruses and fungi to keep the gloves fresh and hygienic.

Porelle Membrane

Between the Kevlar lining and the Pyrohide outer, the Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves have an interlining membrane that is manufactured from Porelle . The membrane is waterproof, windproof, breathable, and durable and also provides an extra layer that helps to reduce the negative effects of heat.

Design Features

Southcombe understands the problems that firefighters face on a daily basis and to ensure that you have the best protection, they have carefully designed the Firemaster Falcon Gloves with certain features. Most notable, the gloves have a coated Kevlar padded knuckle, protecting one of the most vulnerable areas of your hands. The gloves also feature an oblong leather palm patch that improves grip and makes handling easier.

Resistance

Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves have been designed for high resistance against a number of threats including high temperatures, fire, cuts, punctures and abrasion. All of these resistances have been certified to EN standards, the results of which can be viewed below.

Fire and Heat Resistance

It is crucial that if you are coming into contact with fire, you have gloves that can properly protect your hands from damage. The Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves have been rigorously tested to EN standards for heat and flame resistance, see below for more detail.

Property Level Standard
Burning Behaviour Level 4 EN 407
Contact Heat Resistance Level 2 (250°C) EN 702
Convective Heat Resistance Level 4 EN 367
Radiant Heat Resistance Level 2 EN 366
Heat Resistance (Lining) Pass EN 659

EN 659 is a standard that governs the general suitability of gloves for firefighting. The standard covers a range of factors including:

  • Burning behaviour
  • Convective heat resistance
  • Radiant heat resistance
  • Contact heat resistance
  • Heat resistance of the lining material
  • Heat shrinkage
  • Dexterity
  • Seam breaking strength
  • Time for glove removal

Physical Resistance

Physical resistance can be as important to firefighting as resistance to flames and heat. The Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves have the highest level of resistance against all physical hazards, which is great for ensuring that you don't have to worry about the glove losing quality when in use.

Property Level Standard
Abrasion Resistance Level 3 EN 388
Blade/Cut Resistance Level 5 EN 388
Tear Resistance Level 4 EN 388
Puncture Resistance Level 3 EN 388
Dexterity Pass Level 5 EN 420

Sizing of the Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves SB02459A

The Southcombe Firemaster Falcon Gloves are available in seven different sizes. To measure which size you need, please measure your dominant hand (whichever is larger) by making a fist and measuring the tape around the widest part (between your thumb and index finger). Refer to the table to discover the size of glove that is necessary.

Size Measurement in Cm Measurement in Inches
Extra Extra Small 15.2cm 6 inches
Extra Small 17.8cm 7 inches
Small 20.3cm 8 inches
Medium 22.9cm 9 inches
Large 25.4cm 10 inches
Extra Large 27.9cm 11 inches
Extra Extra Large 30.5cm 12 inches

If you fall between two different sizes, we would advise that you pick the larger pair for greater comfort. However, if you would like a tighter fit, the smaller should still be suitable.

What is EN 388?

You might have noticed that this product adheres to EN standard EN 388. EN standards ensure that the product you are buying meets the safety standards of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the highest standards organisation recognised by and working on behalf of the European Union. To pass any EN standard, a PPE product must undergo some of the most rigorous safety tests around.

There are many EN standards that our gloves adhere to. However, the EN standard that we’re concerned about here is EN 388. EN 388 stands for Mechanical Resistance, and informs you of your gloves' resistance to abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures.

How Do I Read the EN 388 Score?

Simply speaking, the higher the score that this product achieves, the better the product will be at resisting that hazard. Products will score between Level 0 and Level 4 for abrasion, tears and punctures, and if they weren’t tested for that hazard you will see N/A written instead of a number.

Cuts are a little different and, with the EN 388 standard rewritten in 2016, it means that gloves will either be tested to cut resistance or ISO cut resistance (sometimes called TDM cut resistance). Gloves tested to cut resistance will score between Level 0 and Level 5, and gloves tested to ISO cut resistance will achieve a score between Level A and Level F with the higher letter offering better cut protection.

Where Can I Find Out More?

This is just a brief overview of EN standard EN 388 so you know where you are standing. For further information, you can see the Introductory EN 388 Blog in our Knowledge Centre.
